Common Peroneal (Fibular) Nerve Entrapment

Common peroneal (fibular) nerve entrapment is compression of the nerve as it wraps around the outside of the knee. It can cause numbness in the lower leg and top of the foot and, in severe cases, foot drop.

  • Treatment starts with removing the underlying cause — for example, adjusting a cast or avoiding high boots and leg-crossing.

    Non-surgical treatment:

    • Anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
    • Leg or foot bracing to support the ankle and reduce irritation
    • Physical therapy to strengthen muscles and reduce pain

    Surgical treatment:

    Surgery is recommended when conservative care fails or when motor or sensory deficits are progressing. Through a small incision at the outer knee, the nerve is explored and released from compression.

    Patients typically go home the day after surgery with oral pain medication and return for follow-up within a few days.
