Benign Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors
Benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors, including schwannomas and neurofibromas, are non-cancerous growths that develop along peripheral nerves. Most can be monitored safely, but symptomatic or enlarging tumors are often treated with surgery.

Treatment is tailored to the individual tumor and its symptoms.
• Observation — small, asymptomatic tumors may simply be monitored with serial imaging
• Surgical removal — recommended for symptomatic, enlarging, or functionally limiting tumors; the goal is complete removal with preservation of nerve function
• Medications — may help manage nerve pain or other related symptoms
With proper diagnosis and treatment, most patients do very well. Because some patients carry an underlying genetic syndrome, a multidisciplinary approach with regular surveillance may be recommended.
